Viking Link appoints marine consultants for interconnector project

Intertek and NIRAS have been appointed as marine consultants to support the permitting process for the offshore component of the proposed Viking Link interconnector.

The project is currently in very early stages of development and marine consultants will be responsible for the delivery of consent application material to permit the installation of approximately 650km of submarine HVDC cables across Danish, German, Dutch and British waters.

To help identify the best option for the marine element of the project, the consultants will provide services including, cable routeing, marine survey support, preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Habitat Regulations Assessment (HRA).  In addition, they will also support engagement with marine stakeholders across all jurisdictions to gain valuable feedback that will contribute to the overall development of the project.

The majority of marine consultancy work will take place until spring 2017, when Energinet.dk and National Grid plan to submit an application for permission to install the submarine high voltage direct current (DC) cables to the authorities in Denmark, England, the Netherlands and Germany.
