Viking Link moves from development to construction phase
Following the contract award announcement on 23 July 2019, Viking Link joint venture partners, National Grid Ventures and Energinet, signed EPC contracts (on 23 August 2019) with their chosen suppliers Siemens, NKT and Prysmian at an event in London.
Reaching this milestone signifies the projects move from development to construction phase, with work in the UK and Denmark beginning in Summer 2020 and completion expected by the end of 2023. When completed, the 1.4 GW high voltage direct current interconnector will stretch 472 miles from the Lincolnshire coast to Western Denmark making it the world’s longest interconnector.
Viking Link will play a vital role in helping to decarbonise the UK’s power supply on the journey to a net zero carbon energy system. With a capacity to power over one million homes, the interconnector will give UK consumers access to cleaner, cheaper and secure electricity.
